BATTLEFIELD BACKSTORY: This is the view a Union soldier had on Sept. 17, 1862, as he approached Bloody Lane. When the Yankees reached the crest of the hill on the William Roulette farm, about 60 yards from the Sunken Road, the Rebels opened fire with terrifying effect. Less than a month after I took this 180-degree photo, all these crops were gone. Usually I walk this field with my head down, hoping to spot a relic or two. Sadly, I never have.
