BATTLEFIELD BACKSTORY: Fort Morgan was so enticing that I twice left the beautiful beaches of nearby Gulf Shores, Ala., during our summer vacation to visit the old Rebel fortress that once guarded Mobile Bay. This is an image of the interior of the fort. The citadel that housed soldiers was heavily damaged by Union bombardment in early August 1864 and was torn down after the war.
