BATTLEFIELD BACKSTORY: Few vantage points anywhere match this one of historic Harpers Ferry, W. Va., and the Potomac River from Maryland Heights. I followed a long, winding trail on a fall afternoon to this spot -- the same trail Union soldiers used to haul artillery and supplies to a fort atop the heights. Harpers Ferry was part of Virginia during most of the Civil War and site of an important Federal garrison that surrendered Sept. 15, 1862, two days before the Battle of Antietam was fought 17 miles away.
