ANTIETAM: 16th Connecticut monument in 40-Acre Cornfield

BATTLEFIELD BACKSTORY: During an early-morning visit to the 16th Connecticut monument several years ago,  I thought I was the only visitor. As I stood in front of the monument, I glanced to my left and was startled when I saw a massive St. Bernard. Thankfully, the dog was friendly and his masters were 15 or so yards behind me. On the morning of Sept. 17, 1862, this field was filled with head-high corn. Hours later, it was covered with wounded and dead of the 16th Connecticut, a green regiment that fought its first battle at Antietam. (Click on image to enlarge and click here for all posts on this blog.)
